THE MULLIKEN FAMILY OF CLOCKMAKERS
A FORTHCOMING BOOK BY BOB FRISHMAN &
DAMON DI MAURO
TO BE PUBLISHED BY THE CONCORD MUSEUM
For nearly a century, from the mid 1700's to the early 1800's, a Massachusetts family of clockmakers produced hundreds of clocks that remain highly cherished and valued today by their owners. These makers include Samuel I and II, Nathaniel I and II, Jonathan, and two Josephs. They lived and worked in the historic Massachusetts towns of Haverhill, Bradford, Newbury, Newburyport, Concord, Lexington, and Salem, and they were important members of those communities. Not only did they craft clock movements from brass and steel but they also maintainted thriving businesses in the professional repair of thousands of clocks and watches as revealed in extant account books. No previous book about the Mullikens has been published, nor have descriptions of their output, lives, and work yet been documented in such length and detail. From their ancestors' 17th-century arrival in the New World until the the age of individual New England artisans had passed by the 1820's, the Mullikens have important stories to tell. This will be far more than a "clock" book; it is an in-depth treatise on New England's Colonial and Federal-era trades and communities.
